San Antonio’s VERNON OF PERSIA has released their newest album, Ascend.

“Weightless,” comes right out of the gate with some discordant melodies and a push and pull that really brings into focus just how dark the band can and does go. The perfect opener.

“Ascend,” is all balls to the walls. Its delivery comes at breakneck speed and the melodies interweave together to show off just where the band is heading. The vocals scream themselves into being and demand attention.

“All Through My Veins,” is a bit meatier, slowly turning around and bringing about some fascinating shifts in the way the listener is meant to hear things. It sometimes jars but otherwise is a pretty solid song.

“Inner Sheep,” delivers a smackdown, and at the same time retains some of the elements that have made past songs stand out. There’s a shake and shimmer element to parts of the song.

“Sea of Trees,” hits the hammer straight away, pushing the boundaries of what might be considered acceptable.

“Marc of the Okubo,” hits the right notes and gets a conversation going, though at times the rhythms feel a bit flat.

The album is out now.
