Toronto Blessings

  1. What inspired the name of the band and what are your influences?

The name of the band came from our guitarist. He read a live review of the band Sleaford Mods and it described the singer of looking like he was having a Toronto Blessing. He messaged us straight away to suggest the idea for our name. We take influence from everywhere really. We love bands like Metz, The Jesus Lizard, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Daughters, Siouxsie and the Banshees,Pink Floyd. We love everything rhythmic, it’s in our manifesto.

  1. How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

For the music one of us will normally bring in an idea or two and we’ll all flesh it out. Some of our best songs have come from an idea sparked off at practice. The good songs pretty much write themselves.

Lyrically the music normal takes me  in a certain direction. Our latest single is about a certain time where I was in a black hole of depression and anxiety. I just thought I need to help and get it off my chest. I hadn’t even told those closest to me I was suffering. It was a way of speaking up and letting people know they can talk.

  1. Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

We basically just write the music that we want to hear. Why write music you don’t like just for the sake of it? The music is just a combination of a big pool of influences we pull from. We all enjoy playing loud, but we stick hooks here and there so it’s not just noise.

  1. How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Our live set is pretty full on so we normally choose the songs that will have the best impact. We’re still a new band so we try and make it a short and snappy set. We’ve got two new ones in the set which are total opposites, one is slow and builds up. The other is fast and to the point. It’s good to mix it up a bit. Non of our songs sound the same tbh.

  1. What are your plans for the future?

Well we’ve just released our single UvU that you should all check out.  We’re then planning to release our EP Asleep, which should be out in October hopefully. We’ve also been working on new songs that we hope to record before the year is out. In the meantime we’re just trying to play as many gigs as we can.
