What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

I was working in a meat factory for a short time after I left school, and ‘Prime’ this or ‘Prime’ that would flash up on the packets of ham or whatever… So this always stayed in mind, and when I wanted a strong name for the band with a heavy vibe, it came back into my mind. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware how big Amazon Prime would become shortly after, so that was a proper pain in the arse! I suppose Oasis had the same problem with the drinks or the travel agents…

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

I think about everyday life or things that are happening in my world or other people’s. No particular theme, but my friend the singer songwriter Dan Heathcote said recently that Prime’s songs have a strong theme of escaping a rigid and flat life, so I suppose there is that element that creeps through into the songs.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Rock music and the indie way of thinking has always been a big part of my life since my teens, so it was always going to have a huge influence on me. My whole method is to be as anti-establishment as possible, even if it’s a subtle, sarcastic way at times. I always wanted to cause a bit of a splash and ruffle a few feathers. My first gigs before Prime came along were very aggressive

How did you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Usually if a song is good enough to record it’s good enough to play live, but there have been a few songs where we got a little lucky with a demo or live recording, and just couldn’t replicate it after that. Also, if a band member with a particular style leaves then it can really hurt the dynamic or vibe of playing something live. Or maybe a new member doesn’t like a song that’s on the fringe. There are many factors.

What plans do you have for the future?

Prime (UK Band) has come to a close with this upcoming final single “Sorry” – the response to the music video so far has been really nice, so it’s good to go out on a high. Next is just to take a break and get some money together for future creative projects that I hope will take the visual ideas and concepts to the next level.
