What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

I go by my real name. I don’t think I’m as influenced by any individual artist or group as I once was, because I push my unique genre and choose not to think about the music by others in order to create new sounds. That said, I still like the massive, exciting wall of sounds Gary Numan still comes with. I also respect and love similar acts from the 80s like Bauhaus to the present day, including Michael Jackson who I met in 2006 – the more you delve into his library (his track “Too Bad”is fantastic), the more you appreciate the diversity of his music. I enjoy listening to Poppy and MGK at the moment. David Sylvian and Avril Lavigne are staples, as is Hans Zimmer. I’m also a big Swifty. However, I wouldn’t say any of them are influences as I perhaps used to think they were.

how and why do you write what you do?

I think creating and appreciating sound is the most exciting part of creating music now. Songwriting is then embedded into it. I have recorded five albums since 2016, all wave around themes such as energy, spirit, apocalyptic, humanity and what is happening beyond us.

I’m interested in visual ideas – cinematic with realism about the world and time. I like a rich, dark and light sentiment and texture. This might explain why I’m told endlessly my music doesn’t sit in an easy genre. This used to bother me but now I’m happy and okay with that.

live?

At this point its about setting my songs apart from other artists. I can do a punk performance but then I want to express a much more serious or epic moment with tracks like Eden Black or Possession from the new album. I want to pave an epic, moving moment.

What plans do you have for the future?

That’s a question. I’m working on new work but I’m also looking at where to perform as it’s become a lot harder to not just get gigs but satisfy promoters who have adopted working almost for the venue/s and not the artists. Money and survival, of course.

It’s strange how hard it is to work out how to get music seen and heard. Streaming is definitely killing the radio star.
