The Median Man sat down with Dying Vision to discuss all things Dying Vision

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

The name was coined by a former member so I won’t try to comment on his behalf.

Our influences include:

Starash:

Musical influences include: early Metallica, Iron Maiden, Death Slayer and Emperor. Non-musical influences: the power of nature and the cosmos.

Owen:

Music (bands) include Rush, Cream, De Lirium’s Order, Cryptopsy, Hexen, Death, Opeth, Ouroborus, Cynic, Akercocke, Athiest, Pestilence, Martyr, Spawn of Possession and Abhorrent.

Bass guitar musician influences: Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, Erlend Caspersen, Steve Di Giorgio, Jereon Paul Thesseling, Steve Cloutier, Eric Langois, Tony Choy, Victor Wooten, Evan Brewer, Geezer Butler, Anton Zhikharev and D.D Verni.

How do you approach songwriting?

Normally one of the guitarists will bring a complete instrumental track in.  Which will be shared with the members.  Drums may be added and rehearsal iterations follow.

Last, lyrics are added.  On past releases these have been contributed by the vocalist however that may change on our next release.

Themes usually emerge at the lyrics stage so that we can come up something that is cohesive between the sound of the song and the lyric choice.  Lyrics often also inform the album artwork  design and our designer’s creation is done with the lyrics in-mind.

Why do you write what you do?

With such a breadth of influences as mentioned above, the creative options in our songs are broad too.  We often have new ideas coming in from this so we collaborate and work them into finished songs.  As long as that remains the case we will keep doing this.

How do you decide what to perform live?

Our current arrangement being drums, 2 guitars bass and 1 vocal are all transferable from studio to stage with relative ease.

For our older songs with keyboards we have those parts set to a click track that our drummer receives.

This means that for our 2 full-length albums, there are no limitations on what we can perform live.  The decision is usually based on the new material that we want to promote, songs that fit well together and keeping within the allocated set time (since we have some long songs)
