What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

The name came about by accident actually. We were looking for one back in the early days and were messing about. Over a couple of beers, our then drummer Gene mentioned the name and we thought it would be good. The name also drives the way we write our music and define the themes behind each album

How do you approach songwriting?

Generally it’s the usual “I have this riff or beat” approach, but as we start building the music up, the themes start falling into place. The exception is with I, Human – our last record. Ryan had this idea to take Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot nook, and turn that into a story line. The difference is we took the idea of being the clone and looking through their eyes. The idea took off well. The current album ||| – is not truly thematic, but we still play on the current issues such as suicide, paedophilia and the current state of the world.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

That’s a good one. We just do. I guess for us it’s the music we grew up on. Everyone now is on the Internet and play / sing  what they think will make them Youtube / tikTok / Instagram stars.

DEM is pretty much different in that sense. Our influences are pretty much varied

Ryan is into Thrash / Prog / Death Metal , Herman is into everything that has an instrument to it. He also play in a hardcore band Out for Blood. Vivek is pretty much into the 80’s synth pop and Death Metal , Neilour dummer loves 90’s metal and Jussi is heavily into Melodic Death Metal

How do you decide what songs to perform live?

We stick with the stuff the crowd likes. Right now we are doing the entire album for ||| and a couple of songs of I, Human and The War Inside. Our next few shows should be interesting as we dig up stuff from 2006.

What plans do you have for the future?

Right now we are looking to head back to the studio to work on some new material and some tours. There are a few shows we are looking at in places like Cambodia and Indonesia later this year, but more music is on the way
