An interview with Alanna Matty

What inspires you, and what are your influences?

I get very inspired by people and emotions, how feelings can drive action and how you can think one thing but actually feel something completely different.  I look to people like Regina Spektor and Feist as huge inspirations, their music is so uniquely them and I strive to create something that people could then say the same about me.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

Song writing never starts with lyrics or a theme for me, it’s more about musical exploration and letting my brain loose on a melody. Once the words start flowing I realize what I’m singing about and can dive deeper into that theme, but if I sit down with words or an idea at the start it will turn out too forced.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

I think the music I wrote fits who I am at the time I wrote it. It’s always something that suits my vocal range and style, but you can literally track how my style has matured since I started writing nearly 10 years ago.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Its definitely based on the venue and what the vibe should be. If it’s calm I’ll bring the piano and keep the energy low but if it’s a bustling bar, I’ll prep a song list that will keep the energy moving and flowing in order to keep the audience entertained

What plans do you have for the future?

I’ve got a new song releasing in September, and plans for more after that. Once it’s safe to travel I would love to put tour plans into the works, but for the time being I’ll still be playing shows live on Twitch
