PERCEPTION OF LIFE

What are your influences?

My influences are really a response to my perception of life. We are all colored by our own experiences and I try to make sense of that through the songs that I write and the stories I craft. Experience is my biggest influence, but I am also moved by human connection and relationships, and how they change over time.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

I think I have a big fascination with looking at life events from multiple vantage points to try to examine them better. I try to explore that in songs, to find one vantage point as if you are looking at it from one side of the mountain and then you climb up the other to see it better with a new light on it. I have a lot of nostalgic sensory experiences that I find are all mixed up with whether events happened in that order, how I experienced them, how potent they were at the time. A lot of my memory operates in this dreamland that I am keen to propel forwards in a fantastical element. It’s my way of examining the truth.

IMPULSE

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

I would primarily say it is a massive impulse. I find the vibrations in certain chords do something to my brain, like it changes the frequency temporarily or something. I know a lot of artists say they create because they don’t have a choice, we all have a choice but I just have this sensory compulsion to write these songs. I’ve tried to make them in a more linear format but this is just how my brain operates and I’m trying to keep as true to that as I can.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

I think it’s a fascinating and fulfilling experience putting a set together because it’s like more shades of the story. I try to find the songs that I think connect in all shades of the prism I am attempting to assemble. I’ve always been more fascinated with the macro micro experience and how that can hopefully connect with others who come to listen to the live music.

I think I try to craft a sound that fits the experience I am trying to create and that experience depends on the place in which they are performed, but as a whole I have a very strong vision of how I want people to feel and thats my biggest impulse; to try to reach that point. It’s an endless work in progress.

CONNECTION

What plans do you have for the future?

I hope I can just make songs that really touch people, that’s all I ever really want.
