  1. What inspired the name of the band and what are your influences?

Zach: Doug gets credit for the name. Crypitus is a misspelled version of the Latin word for the sound of breaking bones. My influences are everything proggy and weird, especially Between the Buried and Me. They’re the bees knees.

Pete: Doug had the name from a previous incarnation of the band. I’m influenced by Frank Zappa, lots of older jazz fusion stuff, Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, Intervals, stuff like that. I love progressive stuff from all eras.

Joe: Doug came up with the name. My influences are Metallica, Primus and System of a Down.

Doug: The name was actually inspired by a wilderness first aid course I took in high school, my teacher at one point randomly came up to me and said “You know what would be a sick metal band name? Crepitus is the sound of breaking bones!” I was sold instantly. My influence at mostly thrash metal based like Death, Exodus and Testament but I love all sorts of subgenres of metal and I try to use that variety to not pigeon hole our sound.

  1. How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

Zach: The guys come up with riffs and stuff and then I hit things in relative time. There isn’t much planning behind it. We’re all incapable of complex thought.

Pete: So far, we have a riff or two that we turn into a song by jamming to it till it resembles something.

Joe: I just go with the flow.

Doug: We are very organic writers, we had an idea and we ride it out.

  1. Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Zach: Really for me it’s because I couldn’t find anyone that wanted to play anything else when we all met.

Pete: I wanted to play heavier music than what I was doing with a blues rock band before

Doug: Metal music has always been an important outlet for me, a real no bullshit kind of music.

  1. How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Zach: We never know what we’re going to play ahead of our set. It’s always a surprise

Pete: The setlist is always off the top of our heads on stage. It’s not that hard to play stuff live that we’ve practiced in our jam space.

Joe: Doug calls a random song out and I play it.

Doug: No setlists please, but we stick to being able to replicate anything we record live, no backtracking no bullshit.

  1. What are your plans for the future?

Zach: World domination. If that doesn’t pan out then our goal is to just have some fun

Pete: See how far we can take this I guess. We are about to release our first album and after that just playing shows and writing more music.

Doug: Play music as often and as widely spread as we possibly can.
