An interview with The Old Revival

An interview with The Old Revival

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

The name came from our love of good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll in all its forms.  The Old Revival has always been about a rock n’ roll revival for us.  I feel like the experience of the full on live rock show and incredible frontmen like Freddy Mercury is a dying art from.  We love it all, and our influences range from Thin Lizzy to Queen and Billy Joel.  It’s all about the passion in the music.

Tell us about the latest release.

Our Second record “9 Meals from Anarchy” is coming out everywhere on November 20th. We recorded it over about 9 months in Bend, Oregon at The Firing room with Dayne Wood. It’s a loosely based concept record written around Alfred Henry Lewis’ theory that any society is only 9 missed meals away from descending into chaos and anarchy.

With this album, we were really able to take the time to capture every sound we wanted people to hear. From the horns, piano, harmonies and guitar work, the songs all got the treatment they deserved. It’s something we are really proud of.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

When I write, it’s all about capturing the emotion and passion of the moment.  It often starts with a thought or a lyric that I may have during the day, and I try to build around that emotion or idea.  So I like to write in the moment, lyrics, melody and all.  Sometimes it just flows, and other times not so much.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Well, we just love rock and roll.  The great thing with this band is we don’t ever set out to make sure something “sounds” like one thing or another.  If it has the passion and is a strong song, we don’t care what style it is.  We just want to write great music.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Over the years you learn the songs that are great live and that people respond to.  It is a mix of what our fans want to hear, and what songs the band wants to play.  Live, we like to be a little more loose so we can be as interactive with the crowd as possible.  It’s all about the experience.

What are your plans for the future?

With touring still at a complete standstill, we just want to keep writing and recording music. We are so proud of “9 Meals from Anarchy”, and we just want to keep writing and creating until we can hit the road and play live music again.  We all miss the live shows so much, and we know our fans do too.  Until then, we will keep ourselves busy in the studio.
