What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

At first, we named our band as “Seventh Segment” but just before our first EP I wanted the band’s name be only a one word and I invented the name Segmentia. We combine several music styles in our songs, like segments. So, there is a clue of our music in the name. There are no particular influencers for us as a band, all though so many are affecting to our music at the same time. Each of us listens a lot of the same bands, but also a lot of different bands that the other members don’t necessarily listen, so together we draw from a pretty varied pool of influences.

How do you approach songwriting?

Almost anything can spark up an idea for a song. Some of the songs are made in one night, some of them seems to need even years to come together. Usually, I have a melody, or a riff and I start my writing from there. Next, I write the drums, bass and piano in it, I often have an idea of guitars in this point. The lyrics come together in the process. I think Save Me is the only song that has been born when we were just jamming. So, there is no clear recipe for this process, actually. The stories of the songs are excerpts from the lives of an individual and the humanity in this world. What we have experienced, what we should understand about life while we are here and, above all, what we should appreciate and cherish. Those are some of the themes that we have been inspiring to us.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

The message of the song is important to me. I don’t only want to talk about the so-called easy things, but I like to bring up taboos from time to time and think about how we treat our world, or how the world treats us. Also, the melodies, instruments and other elements that I like to put in my music ´often happen to be quite epic, so these two goes hand in hand together. That’s why.

How do you decide what songs to perform live?

It’s usually our singer Kansana, who comes up with the setlist. She has a good sense for building a “story arc” for the show and we try to make it a complete experience from start to finish as a band. Our songs are in general, so band based that they work live just as they are very well, but due to not affording to bring a whole symphonic orchestra with us to shows, we are forced to use some backing tracks for the orchestral and synth stuff. Makes scheduling easier though as there’s only four of us in the band instead of 94, hah!

What plans do you have for the future?

Right now, we are getting ready to release our second EP Alone, which will be out early 2023, and also for our upcoming shows in Finland in the first quarter of 2023. We have also started demoing some new songs for our upcoming album. So, we are pretty excited about that! Overall, our plans for the future are just to make even more epic music and become an active internationally touring band!
