An interview with Poison Oak

An interview with Poison Oak

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

The name of the band is inspired from a Bright Eyes song called Poison Oak. I guess we have a wide range influences, for me myself (James), I would say Powderfinger, Paul Kelly and Violent are song strong influences.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

I just do it any which way seems fit at the time. Obviously, a lot of inspiration comes from what happens in my life, so I can draw emotion from that. However, I have to usually experience what I’m writing about, otherwise it doesn’t feel real.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

That’s the way it comes out really, I don’t go in thinking I need to write a certain way. It just is a reflection of life experiences through art and music.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

We have discussion obviously as a band want songs we want to perform live, and the songs are a lot rawer. Which I think is a good thing. We play them as we know them, and I think they comes across a lot more energetic.
