An interview with Lure In

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

The name of the band isn’t exactly anything too mental, the short of it is me (Cameron) & our bassist Jonny wanted to write music & I was on a kick at the time of learning about cults & I wanted to use some of what I learnt to incorporate into the music we were writing lyrically, so with a combination of what I wanted to write about as well as finding a name nobody had so we didn’t have to share Spotify pages or clash with any other bands so from that lure in was born. Influence wise we’ve always been heavily inspired by early metalcore bands like Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Norma Jean & bands like that but we like to incorporate a modern twist to that style with more modern production & just our current listening habits as a band.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

So we started off writing about a story about a cult which we ended with our latest split record mainly kickstarted by leaning about cults & what & just being curious about the mind & how it works, I personally look at our music in a way that we are scoring scenes, like there’s a scene in my head or one of our heads & we are recording/playing what we feel should be being played whilst that scene goes on. I believe it’s a fun way to write things & it can contribute to some pretty cool ideas that you wouldn’t normally do if you were writing any other way.

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

That’s a very good question because honestly there’s layers to it, I’ve always wanted to write music the way we do & I don’t really think there’s a reason or whatever, I one day listened to a dillinger record & was like yes this is cool, I really want to dive into this vibe & see what I can do with it, maybe we write music like this just as a way to pay tribute to what’s come before & maybe we write to expand upon that whilst giving all of us a creative outlet to do whatever we want, I don’t think there’s an exact reason but I’d say it’s something that’s an in-between of creating music I grew up listening to whilst allowing a place for all of us to be creatively free to do things.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

I think it’s the same with most bands, when you write you kinda know which songs are going to go down better live than others & you pick & choose depending on what songs you have available, we do have a lot of sample stuff & production involved with our sound however beginning the band we didn’t really want to go down the backing track route so we had sample one shots on a laptop to carry those aspects over to live whilst still having the kinda chaotic, mental, raw live sound we wanted, as of late more & more of our songs have more production elements going so we may move over to using a backing track one day but we’ll see.

What plans do you have for the future?

So the good news is we are back in the studio to develop some new songs all the way till August so we should be coming up with some new material very soon, however we’ve still not toured or played any live shows for our releases during the pandemic, to which we released our debut full length & few other bits and bobs so we are getting on that pronto too, so new music & some shows are definitely in the plans for the future when it’s possible.
