An interview with AB from Lunar

MOON

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

AB: The name of the band I actually got because of Opeth, whom have always been one of my biggest influences.  I was thinking about them and what their band name means.  According to something I read once it’s supposed to be the name of a lost city on the moon.  That made me think of the moon, then Lunar popped into my head and that was it.

As for influences; Opeth (as I mentioned), Haken, Devin Townsend, Steven Wilson, Caligula’s Horse

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

AB: Yes everything I’ve written so far tends to have some kind of underlying theme.  The first album (THEOGONY) is based on the 9 Greek Muses and the 2nd album (EIDOLON) was written after I lost my friend and Lunar co-founder, Ryan Erwin, about the cycles of life and death and the affects on those left behind.

The approach to songwriting generally starts with these general themes.  I get the ideas for the theme of the album and start writing based around that.  That generally gives me a good idea of the direction I want the songs to take.  Then start off with writing guitar parts and we build around that.

PRIDE

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

AB: To put it in the simplest way possible; because I want to.  I do it because I love it.  I want to make the music that’s true to me, that I enjoy and that I can be proud of.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

AB: Well, unfortunately, we have not been able to perform live with this act yet.  With all our members spread out around the country it’s difficult.  Not to mention the financial aspect of a mostly independent band and trying to do something like that without putting ourselves deep in the red just isn’t realistic this day in age, unfortunately.  I started the project thinking it would end up being a studio only thing, but as the years have passed, I really hope that will change in the near future and we’ll be able to tour with some of this material.

What plans do you have for the future?

AB: We’re currently hard at work on album #3.  It’s still fairly early in the process, but it’s coming along nicely.  I feel confident in saying this is going to be the best Lunar album yet!  There was more involvement in the writing process on this one from both Balmore (guitars) and Ryan (bass) and I think that added to the diversity of the tracks, which I personally really like.  So right now, that’s where all the focus lies is us finishing that up and getting it out to the world.  After that, we’ll see where it goes, but as I said before; I hope that in the future we can start to tour with this material as well.
