An interview with Fred Lee

An interview with Fred Lee

What got you into the writing mood for the new album?

Well actually it was the record by Billy Liar called The Legacy. I took a train down to Stockholm and listened to it and felt that I had a couple of song ideas that would not suit my punk band Sista Brytet. When I write otherwise, it is the ups and downs of life that inspire me, and politics of course. Would probably say that there is an undertone of politics in almost everything I do.

What songs do you want listeners to pay particular attention to on the record?

Good question, I would probably like people to listen to a song called ‘I’ve tried’ which is a summary of my fear of climate and that we, as
humans, try to compromise through life. However, it is difficult for those who completely reject an idea simply because of some myth or
fake news that they have received. It’s something I have to work on myself, to be able to tolerate that some are not as obsessed with
certain issues as myself.

‘The Weight on My Shoulders* is one of the songs that I still listen to, I like it and it’s about the punk scene. I also like ‘Juliet’
which is a calmer song, a little love story.

Is punk more relevant than ever, given the current global state of affairs?

I would not say that being a punk is important, but being open-minded and daring to take a political stand is important. It’s blowing so
much right winds now so being human feels very important.

What plans do you have for the future?

Like many other musicians I want to play, right now it feels like I’m in a vacuum. I Am writing songs for my next record, which has about
11-12 semi-finished songs.
