Interview With Fools For Kings

MUSE

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences and are they the same as when you started out?

When choosing our band name we decided to look to our musical influences for ideas. Eventually, Fools for Kings was our decision, taking inspiration from a muse lyric in the song “Knights Of Cydonia”. Our other influences are bands such as Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, Don Broco and Foo Fighters.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

When writing songs, we tend to start off with either a riff from our lead guitarist Jordan, or a tune or melody from our singer Kieran. They each play the guitar and piano so they use these instruments to their advantage when coming up with new ideas. From there our drummer Isaac will create a beat and Dan will work with Jordan on the baseline. In terms of lyrics we tend to explore themes of darkness and torture, alongside experiences in our own lives.

FAVOURITE

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

We write our own style simply because that is our favourite type of music. For us, you can’t beat the sound of an electric guitar and in addition you can’t beat the whole “band” sound.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

At this point, we have only written and recorded an EP. We do have other music written that would make up at least one album, so right now all of those would be our go-to songs for performing live. We tend to write our music with the idea of performing in our head as well, so that we feel most comfortable when we’re up on stage.

WRITE

What plans do you have for the future?

In the future, we hope to write and perform as many songs as we possibly can. Performing anywhere is amazing for us because we love it so much. We would love to aim towards travelling to as many different places as possible to play live.
