An interview with Everyday Dogs

EVERYDAY

What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

For the first few months that we were a band, we went by a few different names, none of which we really liked. Then my brother Julian [lead singer/rhythm guitarist] came to the band with this song he’d written called, “Everyday Dogs”, and had the idea to use it as the name of the band since we all liked how it sounded. It also fit the vibe of who we are.

We all listen to a lot of different stuff, but we all really love grunge and stuff from the ‘90s (Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, etc)

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

Usually our songs stem from either myself [Jesse, lead guitarist/backing vocalist] or Julian having an idea for part of a song. This is anything from a guitar riff, to a verse/chorus combination, or some lyric ideas. The idea is then taken to the band, and as a group we’ll jam on those ideas and figure what we like and don’t like and how to transform those ideas into fully fledged songs.

There have been cases where songs emerge from some lyrical theme we want to explore in a song, like in our new song, “Black Fire”, which I wrote after reading Dracula for the first time, but for the most part the lyrics are built to fit the vibe/energy of the music itself.

LISTEN

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Our goal with writing music is to write the kind of songs that we would go out of our way to listen to if we hadn’t written them. We all love songs with big guitar riffs and loud drums, so we want to capture those same kinds of factors within our own music to connect and engage with whoever is listening to our stuff.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

We base our setlist off the venue, the length of our set, and the kind of audience that we expect. We have some originals that are staples to our live set (“Nevada”, “Passaround”, and “She’s Crazy”) and we’ll build around those with more originals or a couple cover songs that we think the crowd might really like.\

As far as transposing our songs into a live setting, the big thing is making sure we’re all comfortable with our parts, that way we can really focus on the performance element of engaging with the crowd and giving them a good show.

BLACK FIRE

What plans do you have for the future?

We just finished recording 6 new songs in the studio over this past year, and we’ll be releasing them as singles in the coming months.
