An interview with Dragonbreath

An interview with Dragonbreath

Your name is unique, what made you decide to go with Dragonbreath? And what sort of music inspired you to start playing?

Yeah, our name is unique. The decision for the name Dragonbreath came mainly from our guitarist Demi Draco due to his passion for dragons and fantasy creatures. Back then in 2009, it sounded that will be a kick-ass name for our band and so here we are today.

How do you approach songwriting? Is there a set process you have, or does it vary?

The process of song writing is not fixed in the case of Dragonbreath. First of all, we have to mention that only a few days per year we are all at the same time in the same place to practice and to compose. So rarely we are composing a song all together. What we usually do, is each of us comes with an idea and if we like it we proceed by working on it, each of us adding his detail to the song until it reaches its final form. To be more precise the most of the ideas for the new song comes from the Michael brothers. Andreas is writing the guitar and Marios the bass guitar, as long as they live together is very convenient to build up an idea and then introduce it to the other band members. However, sometimes when we are all together in the studio we can write a song from the begging. Without having something in our minds, just jamming, and then we keep what we like, eventually, we can end up having a song. What is worth mention here is that each one of us has its contribution to songwriting. Concluding that many factors affecting how Dragonbreath are going to write new materials and the processes for sure is not fixed.

Were there any themes that you wanted to explore on The Awakening? If so why?

The Awakening is divided into two themes sections. The first section of the album consists of songs with historical and mythological content. The story of Leonidas and his 300 soldiers who stood in Thermopylae against the Persian army, the story of Achilles who seek revenge for the death of his beloved cousin, the curse of Hamounaptra, and the last song to complete the first theme section is a tribute to the people who lost their lives in the tragic event which happened in our homeland in the summer of 1974. The first section compromises the deep interest and passion that we have for history and mythology and we wanted to let people know about these stories through our songs.

The second section is the prequel of the next album which is going to be a concept album. The main interest of the second theme section is the story which is hiding behind our mascot, Warrior. It is an epic fantasy story with warriors, dragons, and mystical powers. Unfortunately for more details about our storyline you have to wait for the next album. We always wanted to write our epic fantasy story and narrate it through our song.

Which song do you think bests represents the album and why?

In my opinion, Zillak which is the last track of the album is the song that best represents the album. A drum solo intro, fast and heavy opening guitars riffs and a catchy melodic refrain is what people expect to listen to when the name Dragonbreath comes up. Zillak is a song that incorporates all the characteristics that we want each one of our songs to have. Moreover, Zillak is the song with a story that will be continued in our next album which we want to be a concept album. Zillak is the Warrior mascot illustrated on our album cover and the song is telling a little bit about his story.

What plans do you have for the future?

As Dragonbreath we want to continue providing to our audience this high quality of heavy metal and to keep spreading our music worldwide. When this pandemic will be over we want to have some live shows in our home country and abroad as well. We will start working on the next album in a few months, which is going to be a concept album as we have mentioned before.
