An Interview With Dig Two Graves

FORTUNE COOKIE

What inspired the name of the band and what are your influences?

Jaybee: The name was given by a fortune cookie eaten at Joyful House of Chinese Cuisine in Las Vegas, Nevada. We are heavily influenced by the work of Kero Kero Bonito, Dir En Grey, and Caravaggio.

Kenny: We take inspiration from a lot of different bands and a wide variety of genres. Some of our main influences are Kero Kero Bonito, Make Them Suffer, Silent Planet, Fats Domino, and Kanye West.

How do you approach songwriting? Are there any themes that you are keen to explore when you start off?

Jaybee: I usually write the groundwork for every song but the inspiration differs. Our song “Track 2” was written while I was looking at a Baroque painting. Other songs were written based off of dumb stories in my head, which were not told to Mike prior to him writing the lyrics. I try to write the soundtrack to fairy tales and/or horror movies, and then have Mike do whatever he wants on top of it.

Kenny: I just add blast beats and unnecessary fills to everything.

SAD

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Jaybee: Because I’m sad.

Kenny: We like to combine pretty melodies with heavy guitar and blast beats. Doesn’t always have to be that but that seems to be our main style. Overall we just like to make music that’s fun and something we would listen to ourselves.

How do you decide what songs to perform live and how do you transpose them into that live setting?

Jaybee: Lately we just play our whole ep cover to cover. But while we’re deciding what new songs to incorporate, we just kinda play whatever we want to. I feel like there is a lot of thought that goes into the first and last songs, but in the middle we do whatever we want.

BREAD

What plans do you have for the future?

Jaybee: I wanna make hella bread and tour the world. Then I wanna sit in a rickety rocking chair and yell at passersby.

Kenny: In the near future we are looking to drop our debut full length album and a cute music video to go along with.
