TRADITIONAL

What inspired the formation of the band?

It was the idea of Dovzhenko twins, Dmitry and Roman. They wanted to make something different from their other musical activities, which were mostly concentrated in black- and death metal genres. The guys wanted to create music in a more traditional way with a vintage metal flavor. Their former DRAMA [black metal band from Yeysk, Russia] bandmates were invited to fill the bass and 2nd guitar duties. I became the final link of this heavy metal chain and keep torturing the microphone for this band since early 2015.

REFUGE

Why do you write the sort of music that you do?

Because it’s something that we’ve always loved and what we grew up with. I would call this traditional kind of metal that we’re playing a comfortable refuge from the craziness that’s happening in the world and all this mediocre and insincere music that flooded the television and radio broadcasts. And we’re having major fund doing that! So it’s the main reason.

IDEA

How do you decide what to write a song on?

It depends. Sometimes one of our members has a certain idea what the song should be about. Sometimes the lyrical idea comes out from the vocal melody, those bits, and phrases that I sing when the song is only being created.

How did you approach writing and recording for the new album?

I’d say that we were more prepared this time. Roman had many ideas recorded on his phone. We sat down and listened to every riff and musical idea, made our notes, and started building the songs from there. I also brought one of the tracks “Let It Slide”, which became the opener. Studio-wise we were more prepared too. Our guitarist Sergey stepped in as an engineer and managed to record everything we needed, even the drums, in our budget studio.

WHAT WORKS

DELAYED

How has the coronavirus impacted you?

Well, when the album was finished, we had to gather for a photo shoot. But we couldn’t do that for like two months, because one of us would get ill all the time. Not sure if it was corona, but we tried to isolate ourselves, and the rehearsals also stopped. Needless to say, the photographers were also on isolation. So it kind of delayed everything. We didn’t have any touring plans before the album release, so we didn’t face any concert cancellations, like many artists today.
