What inspired the name of the band? What are your influences?

The name took ages to find! In our Messenger band group we put loads of different ideas and names in, but eventually set on Amongst Liars because it stood out to us as having a strong view towards the world today. It was a good process finding the name though, as we also got a few cool song titles out of it all!

We are an amalgam of two bands, Katalina Kicks and Saint Apache, both of whom had a political edge when it came to the writing, so we didn’t want to lose that ‘real world’ side of what we are about as people moving forwards.

Also the word Liars holds each of our initials, so that cemented the name!

I think each member could reel off different musical influences, which is why we feel we are making some interesting music with all the influences coming together.

The core band influences I would say would be Audioslave, Shinedown, Dinosaur Pile Up, QOTSA, RATM and Royal Blood, that we put our on twist on.

Why do you write the music that you do?

I think we have quite a diverse taste and we aren’t afraid to try new things in writing. We always wanted to dip into different sounds and styles whilst keeping that alternative rock core and hopefully a fresh modern rock sound.

We like to keep it very real with the lyrics too and write about things happening in the world and our lives that are important to us.

How do you approach writing songs, are there any themes you look at before you start?

Lyrically we like to write about events, experiences or things that help shape us all as individuals and as a band, but usually the theme and lyrics come last.

We will start the process jamming over riffs first and see what works and sounds really strong and then build on those into a song structure. Some songs come quickly, but others like Burn the Vision took ages, as we just couldn’t get a strong chorus – it took 4 months and we ended up finishing it as we actually recorded the song in the studio with our producer!

Once we have an interesting song structure will then come up with a melody and again that will be worked on all together until we are all happy and we will mould the song into something that we feel is as tight as it can be. Once we have the melody down we then look for inspiration for lyrics.

Of our three singles to date, Over and Over was about being on the treadmill of life and getting up after being knocked back. Being reborn into the new band if you will; Wolf Machine has a political edge and Burn The Vision is more fake news and media focused, talking about the lack of empathy on horrible things happening in this world. Our next song Mind (out in November) is more about suicide and depression. So all serious subjects and it has been nice to open the gates and write about them.

What plans do you have for the future?

We have a new single out at the moment called Burn the Vision, so are busy with promoting that now. Then another single coming in early November called Mind.

We have also been writing like crazy over the lockdown period and have loads of new songs, so will be recording our debut album in November and then look to come into 2021 with a bang and tour loads – coronavirus allowing – and release the album, so we are very excited for the future. We really just want to play, play, play, as this year has been frustrating from that perspective, but at the same time we have capitalised on it and written loads of new material.
